Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you have considered adding a garden to your backyard to take advantage of its many health benefits, one challenge you might face is space confinement. Community gardens and limited yard space might be thwarting your plans to create the outdoor oasis of your dreams. However, there are a few strategies you can keep in mind when it comes to creating a garden, whether you are a beginner or have enjoyed gardening for years but now must do so in a smaller space.
1. Raise Those Plants
Limited plot space does not have to limit your gardening creativity, especially when you use container gardening. There are several advantages to this style of gardening, with the greatest being you can place your containers wherever you want to give your plants the proper sunlight and to make the best use of any outdoor space you have. This can also be a fine solution if you live in an area where the soil is rocky, dry, or hard to turn, as you can use nutrient-rich potting dirt that will result in robust flowers, fruits, and vegetables.
2. Grow on Your Patio
Your backyard garden does not have to be enclosed in one space for it to thrive. Consider using large patio pots to expand your garden beyond a simple plot. You can use a variety of pots to grow tomatoes, creeping vines, and larger flowers. This can add beauty and living art to your patio and even create privacy barriers if you choose to use large terra cotta pots.
3. Create a Hanging Garden
Your porch or patio can offer you additional growing room with a few hanging pots and a bit of ingenuity. While you might think of flowers and vines when you visualize hanging baskets, you can grow a variety of vegetables and herbs in these planters as well. Hanging baskets can also add a lush feeling to your porch, and their portability allows you to move them around so they get the best possible light.
4. Repurpose Backyard Containers
Recycling old backyard containers, such as galvanized tubs, can help you expand your garden beyond its plot. To make a space for herbs or smaller plants, punch two or three holes in the bottom of a steel tub to allow water to drain. Fill it with a mix of soil and compost, then add your seeds. You can intersperse these buckets with potted plants to make a truly unique addition to your garden.
If you plan to create additional garden space and you have an outdoor HVAC condenser, it is important that you do not block off the unit with your plants. Try to place your potted plants at least three to five feet away from the condenser, as it needs space to draw in air freely. If you are concerned about how your plants might affect your heating and cooling, schedule an hvac system tune-up so you can ask your technician any questions you might have, as doing so can protect your plants and your home’s AC unit as well.
Gardening can be a relaxing and enjoyable hobby, even if your home has a small backyard. With a bit of creativity, you can transform your property into an oasis of flowers, veggies, and herbs that you can enjoy each time you step outside.

Great ideas! I love container gardening, and have acquired a lot of containers over the years. I love being able to place them anywhere, not just in flower beds! Thank for the post!

That’s a beautiful garden you got there. I especially love those big bloom hydrangeas! I try to improve our little backyard every year. It takes time but I’m really enjoying our garden nowadays 🙂

Great tips! I repurposed a drum and a bathtub (the latter is yet to be filled with plants – I am thinking a meadow or cottage garden for next year).

I really want to improve the look of my patio. It is good to know that it might be smart to get some hanging planters. Personally, I would want to have a lot of shade. It might be smart for me to talk to an arborist about if I can get some tall tree in my yard.
