Hello World! Welcome Friends! Home renovations, more than just a means to express your property’s potential, can be a thrilling journey that transforms your living space into a more purposeful and enjoyable environment. The process of envisioning and creating your dream home is a rewarding experience in itself. Moreover, well-planned renovations can significantly increase the value of your home, making it a wise investment.
It’s crucial to understand that the reality of living through renovations, even smaller projects, can be a bit different from what we see on home makeover shows. Once initiated, the process can bring about some upheaval. However, with proper preparation, you can take charge of these challenges and come out on the other side with a beautifully renovated home, feeling empowered and in control.
Rest assured, these tips are designed to help you mentally prepare for what comes next, ensuring you feel confident and secure throughout your home renovation journey.
Be Realistic About Timelines
The first thing you need to wrap your head around is timelines. While it’s nice to think that nothing will go wrong and you will finish precisely on time; that rarely happens. Many variables can impact the work being carried out on your home, such as supply delays, unexpected problems you are unaware of, scheduling conflicts, staff absence from your contractor’s end, and poor craft, to name a few. The more realistic you are about how long the work will take before it starts, the easier it will be to accommodate delays should they crop up.
Where Are You Living?
A critical aspect of home renovations is how they will impact your living arrangements and how you can live at home during work. This is especially true for more significant projects that can upend your home and leave your sign in chaos for extended periods. Some people can rearrange their homes and lives and compromise quickly. In contrast, others quickly realize they can’t cope with their kitchen appliances in their living spaces or vice versa and not having easy access to cooking or bathing facilities.
If the latter sounds like you, you might consider moving out to stay with a friend or family member, booking furnished short term rentals, or even going on vacation, which can be a preferable alternative.
Implement Dust Barriers
Renovation work is dirty and dusty, and you need to be prepared for the dust you will be living with daily, even in the parts of the home that aren’t having work done on them. You should be implementing dust barriers on doorways or covering furniture as a minimum to help you reduce damage dust particles can cause on your home and help you with easier clean up. Even dust barriers won’t eliminate or protect you from all the dust generated, but they can prevent damage and protect your home until work is completed.
Have a Contingency Plan and Budget
As mentioned earlier, things don’t always go according to plan. Even the most meticulously planned projects can encounter hiccups. With this in mind, it’s crucial to always have backup plans in place for unforeseen circumstances and, of course, a budget for emergencies. These measures may not always be necessary, but if you do run into issues, they can be a game-changer and help you get things back on track more smoothly.
Plan for time off work or implement flexible working here so you can be free to assist with any major problems or avoid major disruption to your life. Keep around 10% of the total cost of the work aside for emergencies, and have a travel bag of essentials ready to go should you need to leave your home for any reason. Plan for the worst, and hope for the best!
