Hello World! Welcome Friends! Making Little Rooms Feel Like Big Spaces!
Just because a room doesn’t have a lot of floor space doesn’t mean you have to feel hemmed in. There are plenty of things that can be done to expand the perception of space, and even maintain high levels of storage. Following we’ll explore four ways you can make even the smallest spaces in your home seem huge.
1. Lighting, Mirrors, Wallpaper, And Paint Schemes
The sort of lighting defining a space will make it seem larger or smaller. Consider a dark room. What the eye doesn’t see the imagination fills in. So dim or faint lighting can impart a “largeness” to space. However, this may not be convenient. Sometimes you’ll want some sort of bright lighting.
Pale colors—especially stark white—eliminate the appearance of interstices at the corners of rooms, making them appear larger than they are. You can paint a room white colors and use varying design tactics to cover over corners, making it so the eye “slides” over the space in such a way that it doesn’t get “caught” on anything. That makes a room feel big.
Mirrors increase the perception of light in a space. Ever been in a tiny bar that feels large owing to the mirrors behind the bottles where the bartender works? Well, that’s why. Mirrors make spaces seem larger. You can put mirrors all-around a tiny room and it will feel huge.
Similarly, how you “wallpaper” space can make a big difference. If you put very “busy” wallpaper throughout the space, it can have an effect that makes the room feel small, or large. Garish wallpaper is cloying, but a scheme like a jungle makes space feel as though some sort of lore hides in the walls.
2. Cabinetry Conformed To A Specific Space
The right sort of cabinets can allow you to have storage without sacrificing space utility, but this is especially difficult in spaces that have unique or idiosyncratic construction. For example, an attic space where the walls slope steeply toward the corners of the room can be hard to mount cabinets on—at least, those which are traditional.
In contrast, Ready To Assemble cabinetry, or RTA, can fit this niche perfectly. These cabinets are designed by putting in dimensions that define where the cabinets will ultimately be installed online. Then they’re shipped to you. Here’s a link to some RTA Cabinet Reviews to help give you an idea of what’s out there, and what may well work for your specific space.
3. Chair Storage, Vertical Storage, And Low Seating
Chairs can be used to store things. You can put them beneath cushions, and you don’t lose any space. Low seating likewise makes a room feel larger than it would be otherwise. If you can store things “vertically”, that allows you to fit more in a smaller space without sacrificing the room’s overall size. Combining methods like these can do much to maximize scant space.
4. Foliage Like Vines Or Other Plants
Just as tasteful jungle-print wallpaper might make a room seem larger than it is, proper foliage décor also adds a sort of “exterior” feels to an “interior” space. You could make a tiny room into a tiny sunroom. Keep the windows open, put mirrors all around the walls, install vertical RTA cabinets, paint or wallpaper with rainforest-themed designs, and put vines around the roof.
Essentially, you can have a potted plant here, a hanging plant there, a collection of vines rooted behind the door at the space entry, and suddenly a room that’s only a hundred square feet feels like the great outdoors itself.
Maximizing Space Even When Not Working With Much
Even if you’re working with a relatively minuscule space, careful design and space management can maximize what you’re working with so that it seems massive. To that end, there are a few notable tactics you might want to consider.
Interior foliage expands the perception of size in space, chair storage, vertical storage, and low seating also make a space feel larger. Cabinetry designed to fit a specific space does much to expand the perception of size defining a room while maintaining storage capacity. Lastly, lighting, mirrors, wallpaper, and paint schemes can impart an impression of size.
Whichever of these tactics best fits your needs or preferences, don’t write off a tiny room just because it doesn’t seem useful. You can do a lot with a little through imagination.
