Hello World! Welcome Friends! It doesn’t matter where you live or whether your home is a house, apartment, or log cabin in the woods. There will be times where you need to heat the rooms in your abode, especially during the colder months of the year. Many people will use typical methods for heating their homes, such as a boiler-fired central heating system or even electric underfloor heating.
But, what if you wanted to heat your property using off-grid methods? It’s likely you’ll want to do so if you live in a rural area. Of course, some people may wish to do so if they want to lead a more self-sustainable lifestyle, even if they reside in an area with accessible gas and electricity supplies. Whatever the reason, if you’re looking for some creative off-grid ways to heat your home, take a look at these ideas for size:
Use a log burner or open fire in each room
Do you live in an area where there is plenty of wood or alternative fuels for fires? If so, it could make sense to use a log burner or have an open fire in each room you wish to heat. The beauty of that idea is you won’t need to rely on a piped gas supply for your heating needs, and you can make use of natural resources around you that are in abundance.
Be sure to have a place to store the wood or whatever resources you’re planning to use. Most people opt for an outside shed that is waterproof so that their fire fuel is kept dry and is ready to use.
Upgrade to modern windows
You might not realize it, but a lot of heat escapes homes and goes out into the atmosphere due to poor window insulation. The thing about the materials used to make windows is they eventually go brittle and cause cracks and splitting. And even old plastic-based windows can expand and contract enough to cause gaps between the windows and frames.
When that happens, it will soon become time to replace your windows. The good news is today’s modern windows are long-lasting and will help to keep your home warm and insulated for longer.
Fit solar window boxes
An innovative yet often overlooked way of heating rooms is with the use of solar window boxes. So, how do they work? In a nutshell, solar window boxes are airtight and made of translucent materials. The sun warms the air inside the boxes and ducting from each solar window box transfers the warm air to rooms in your home. Of course, there are some disadvantages to solar window boxes, the main one being they only work during daylight hours.
Use an oil-powered boiler
Last, but not least, you could consider having an oil-powered boiler fitted. A condensing oil boiler is around 93% efficient, and you can use waste engine oil as your fuel source. That means you could save a lot of money to heat your home, especially if you have access to free used engine oil!
