Are you fed up with playing it safe with the color scheme in your home? There’s only so much neutral shade upon neutral shade one house can take. The fact is that bravery does pay off, and if you are bold enough to mix and match patterns and colors, although challenging at first, it really can pay off. But with so many different patterns and colors out there, how do you know where to start?
Before you start choosing patterns at random, here are our top tips to steer you in the right direction…
Choose your color palette first
The biggest challenge you’ll face when mixing and matching colors and patterns is deciding which combinations work, and which really clash. The first step in this process is to decide upon a color palette you really love. Once you have a base, you can then start to look at the different options to build on. There are warm and cool sides of every color, so if a particular shade doesn’t work, you should still be able to find one that does.
The simplest solution
The easiest way to inject a little pattern into your interior design scheme is to choose one colored pattern and combine that with a white background. The pattern you choose is up to you. Nautical themes are popular, with navy blue and white combining seamlessly, regardless of the shade. Monochrome schemes in white and black are also effortless and a simple place to start. You can then add patterns such as chevron stripes or bold prints to create the statement you’ve been trying to make.
Don’t be scared of bold colors or prints
If you’re going to mix and match colors and patterns, it pays to be bold and not shy away from the brighter colors and bolder prints. Oka’s cushion combination tool is a great way to see whether different colors, patterns and materials will clash, and which are natural bedfellows. But you don’t have to go over the top. Neutral colored walls can be combined with just the right colored patterns to give your home the wow factor.
Use different pattern sizes
When mixing and matching patterns in your interiors, make sure you keep changing their size. Large-scale patterns can intermingle well with smaller prints as long as the colour scheme remains the same. For example, you could choose a large print for a piece of wall art of window treatment, then use smaller patterns for accent cushions and other accessories. The greater the variety of the size of the patterns you choose, the more comfortable the space will eventually feel.
