Hello World! Welcome Friends! Even if you don’t think of yourself as a DIY person there are a lot of home projects that can be completed relatively easily if you plan ahead and have the right tools. Being able to do some small projects around the house can save you money and allow you to personalize your home and create a home that reflects your lifestyle and your personal style. Whether you are an experienced DIYer or are just starting out, to learn how to do DIY follow these three tips and your DIY projects will always turn out great.
1. Have a Variety of Tools
Every homeowner should have a basic tool kit that contains tools that will allow you to complete a variety of different jobs around the house. You probably already know that you need a hammer and a variety of screwdrivers for hanging pictures and tightening things but there are other essentials that should be part of your tool kit too. Every basic tool kit should have the following:
- Hammer
- Variety of nails
- Construction level
- A good wide blade tape measure
- Wood glue or all surface glue
- Duct tape
- Wrench
- Screwdrivers
- Pliers
- Pocket rods
- Screws
- Wirecutters
- Pencil for marking things
- Allen wrenches
- Staple gun and staples
- Boxcutter
With those tools on hand you should be able to get a good start on almost any DIY project. You can always get project specific tools if you need them.
2. Choose Projects That Fit Your Expertise
When it comes to doing DIY projects you need to be comfortable with your ability level and learn to say no to a project that is beyond your skills. If you pick DIY projects that are too advanced for your skill set you can end up causing a lot of damage to your home, waste a lot of time, and spend a lot of money to get the project professionally redone. DIY is supposed to save money and time not cost more of those things.
As you’re learning to DIY, start with small projects and work your way up to larger ones learning as you go from online videos, books, tutorials, or friends who are more experienced. Keep learning and eventually you will be able to do the harder projects too.
3. Plan it Out
Planning is essential for a successful DIY project. When there is a DIY project that you want to do, the best place to start is to sit down with paper and a pencil and walk through the project from beginning to end. Plan out what materials you’ll need and make a list of the things you don’t have.
Next, break the project into steps so that you have an action plan of tasks to do. Estimate how much time each step will take and whether or not there is additional time necessary for that step, like waiting for paint to dry and cure. Make a note of the time you estimate that each step will take next to that step.
That way when you start the project you’ll know approximately how much time it will take and you’ll have a workable action plan of steps to take. When you do that you won’t panic halfway through the project and forget what to do next or run out of time to complete the project.
A little preparation and planning as well as having the right tools will make DIY projects easy and fun so that you can enjoy putting some personal touches in your home.
