Hello World! Welcome Friends! Everyone wants to feel secure in their home. No one wants to think about someone attempting to break into their home to rob them, but it can happen. When you think your home is safe and then discover a break-in attempt or a burglary, there are important steps to take. This is the time to consider beefing up security and taking steps to make the home less appealing to burglars.
What to Do when a Home Has Had An Attempted Burglary
After a nice vacation, a shopping trip, or a night out, a family comes home to discover someone has attempted to enter their home or even gotten in and robbed them. There are important steps to take immediately.
1. Always contact the police so they can investigate and add more patrols to the neighborhood. Next, notify your insurance company if there was property damage or items were stolen.
2. Increase your home security by adding cameras, alarms, and security latches on doors and windows. Also, consider shatterproof window film to make windows and doors harder to get into. Safety glass film acts as a good crime prevention measure. Visible cameras and loud alarms are also good burglar deterrents. Consider purchasing a monitored security system. Place security company stickers near doors and windows.
3. Take these additional steps to make your home less attractive to burglars. Trim all trees and bushes to make the home more open and visible to police patrols and neighbors. Get to know the neighbors so you can all keep an eye out for each other’s homes. Get a dog because most burglars will bypass homes with barking dogs. Add motion sensor outdoor lights.
4. Once all of the appropriate authorities have been contacted, you will want to look into getting a safe deposit box. The benefit of a safe deposit box is that you can secure important documents, jewels, family heirlooms and cash off-site knowing they are safe and secure.
Don’t Take a Chance If the Burglar May Still Be On-site
One important consideration is the thought that the burglar may still be on-site. So, call the police before entering the home or disturbing the site. Do not attempt to confront an intruder yourself. They may be armed or violent when cornered. It is not worth being injured or worse. Go to a safe location and call the local police. Wait for them to arrive before entering the home.
If the burglar did not succeed in entering the home, you were lucky. But, they may come back to attempt entry again. By contacting the police, you can prevent another break-in attempt when the police increase patrols in the area.
Act Quickly to Increase Home Security
Once the police have left and you have assessed the damage or missing items, call the insurance company quickly. In addition to calling the insurance company, call your bank to report the theft. That way, if your information on bank accounts was accessed, you can avoid fraudulent charges to your bank account. It might be wise to contact all of your credit card companies and credit-reporting agencies to report a security alert.
If you were lucky enough to have no breach of your property, breath a sigh of relief and take steps to prevent future break-in attempts.
Increase your home security quickly by adding security equipment such as visible cameras, alarms, and a monitored security system. Don’t forget to consider adding a security window film to all windows to make them entry-proof for burglars. Beef up the window locks. Check sliding glass doors and all entry doors for security and replace any flimsy locks with dead-bolt locks installed with long screws.
In addition, alert your close neighbors about the burglary attempt so they can take safety steps. Consider parking one of the family cars in the driveway and leaving a TV or radio on when you are gone. This indicates to a burglar that someone may be home and they will bypass your home. Leaving a light on may also be helpful. Any steps to make your home less appealing to potential burglars are good ones.
