Hello World! Welcome Friends! Do you know your kitchen has the most germs of any room in your house, even the bathroom? These germs can wreak havoc in your household. One little bacteria cell can become over 8 million cells in 24 hours! You can stop many of these germs from leaving your kitchen by incorporating some good habits into your daily routine.
Clean, Don’t Spread Germs

Kitchen sponges are one of the worst offenders when it comes to germ spreading. You clean up spills then use the sponge to wipe down counters or clean off dishes. All those cracks and crevices in sponges make great hiding places for bacteria. Before you wipe off the counter, place your wet sponge in the microwave for two minutes to eliminate hidden germs and stop their spread.
Dish rags are just as bad as sponges. Replace your dish rags at least weekly and make sure to wash them in the washing machine and dry on high heat. Also, faucet handles, refrigerator door handles, and doorknobs are all surfaces that collect germs. Use a disinfectant cleaner on handles several times a day, before and after touching these objects.
Beware of Cooking Surfaces and Glasses
The cutting board is another source of hidden bacteria. The average cutting board has 200 percent more germs than the average toilet seat. So, before you slice your strawberries on that surface, make sure it is disinfected. Remember to clean and disinfect that cutting board between uses, even for the same recipe. If you just sliced up chicken, don’t use the board for slicing vegetables without a thorough cleaning. Even better, have separate boards for cutting raw meats and another for vegetables and fruits.
Try switching to paper cups, especially during cold and flu season. Germs can live on your glassware, and someone may accidentally sip after another infected person has used the glass. Disposable plastic or paper cups are a better way to go. If you can, buy assorted colors and assign each family member a color to prevent any mix-ups when getting a drink.
Dangers Lurking in Tap Water
Many municipalities tell you the tap water is fine to drink. Yet, over 300 contaminants have been found in water that comes from our home faucet. Buying bottled water is great, but what about brushing your teeth or cooking with tap water?
The best way to make sure your family isn’t getting more than they bargained for in your water is a home filtration system. AC Repair Sarasota can check your water to find out what chemicals are in it, and then fit your home with a filtering system that is right for you. Plus, filtered water isn’t as hard on your pipes, and they could save you some money on your plumbing bills in the future.
Fighting germs in your home is a never-ending battle. Make sure you aren’t making the situation worse by unknowingly spreading germs over your kitchen surfaces and dishes. Practice safe cleaning, and wash your hands often to keep bacteria and other germs from contaminating your entire house.
