Hello World! Welcome Friends! By design, homes are supposed to try and trap heat in your home during the winter. It should be cold outside, but relatively warm inside. There will be times when your home feels a bit chilly, but turning the thermostat up should do the trick.
Having said that, what should you do when your house gets too cold? You’ve had the furnace on and it still feels freezing, so you’re cranking it up to outrageous temperatures. You can’t keep doing this throughout the day – and for the entire winter season – so what are the next steps? If your house is too cold, it’s worth checking these things:
The Furnace
Your first port of call will be the furnace. Check to see if everything is running properly. It’s crazy how many issues can affect a furnace and make it inefficient. Your home might be cold because you’re not generating enough heat from the furnace – which is why you’re cranking up the temperature to try and overcompensate.
To be honest, everyone should have a yearly furnace maintenance check before the winter season begins. Get someone to look at your furnace and check that all is okay. If there are issues, it’s better to fix them before the winter chill kicks in. Sometimes a replacement part or cleaning out some dust from the vents is all it takes to make your furnace heat your home again.
Windows
When your furnace is fine but the house still takes ages to heat, it could be a window problem. Cracks and gaps form in the window seals, creating drafts. Cold air comes in from outside, and heat escapes from your home.
You enter the impossible situation of trying to warm a house that keeps letting heat out! Spotting drafts is easy as you stand by the window and see if you can feel cold air. If that’s the case, you should call a window maintenance company. Fingers crossed you’ll only need some new sealant or minor window repairs.
The Roof
Lastly, head to your attic if the furnace is fine and your windows are tightly sealed. Heat could be escaping through the roof. This happens when your roof is damaged and small cracks are forming in the tiles. It means all the heat that travels up through your house escapes in these gaps.
Look for signs of light shining through gaps in your roof and call professional roofing contractors for a second opinion. If your roof is okay, there could still be a problem in your attic that makes your home feel cold: the insulation. Check that it’s still in good condition and consider when it was installed. You may need to replace it as it no longer does a good job of insulating your home.
Perform these checks, make any necessary repairs, and see if there’s a difference. You should notice a much warmer home that doesn’t take ages to heat. In fact, you can probably turn your thermostat down because the house retains heat a lot better and isn’t constantly freezing!
