Hello World! Welcome Friends! As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that my decor style has changed quite significantly. Back in May when I revealed our Breakfast Nook for the One Room Challenge, I had a dear friend who came over and just stood and stared at the space. After what seemed like an eternity of silence where I thought she was probably thinking I had lost my mind, she turned to me and said, “Girl, you need a Versailles”! When she said that, something on the inside of me went off. That’s it! I have found my style! Granted, it’s not quite on the level of Versailles, but the foundation is definitely French.
In the past, when asked what my design style was I always stated Traditional Glam. My roots are definitely Traditional with a tendency to lean towards mixing metals and patterns. I have tried to tone it down and I’ve discovered that I don’t know how to pull off that look. All of the different styles like Farmhouse Chic, Contemporary, Mid-Century Modern, Shabby Chic, and Transitional are styles that I admire. I definitely could not pull off Minimalism! With all of the different styles out there, it makes me want to invest in some Interior Design Courses!
So, now that we know what the Design Dream is; let’s take a look at Versailles or Versailles inspired interior pictures.
This space is completely dreamy to me. It has that cool blue that is often referred to as Marie Antoinette Blue. The moldings and gold furnishings are exquisite!
This intimate dining space is in a New York apartment that was designed by Howard Slatkin. The apartment is referred to as the Versailles in the Sky! The decor is over the top in a good way. Howard has an art for taking cluttered decor and making it look like sheer non-messy perfection. One could while away the hours taking in this room’s gorgeous surroundings.
I am drawn to the mix of wall patterns, soft lighting and just look at those legs on the dining table! I’ll admit, it’s a lot to take in, but I am captivated by the space.
This space is another apartment in New York that was designed by Michael S. Smith. This space has 18th century Chinese lacquer panels on the walls and doors.
The next two spaces are from the Palace of Versailles.
This dining room is located in one of the many apartments that make up Versailles. What is not to love about this space? Gold-leafed mirrors and panels, an elaborate chandelier, and the blue that can be found throughout Versailles.
The above space was the King’s personal library.
I adore each of these spaces and have gleaned quite a bit of inspiration from each one. French Interior Design is ornate, fanciful and decorative. While I am drawn to this style, I admit my style is a bit more relaxed.
Here are a few items that I have gathered from spending hours looking at French Decor Inspiration.
Characteristics of a French Home
Colors range from rich, sun-drenched Mediterranean hues to softer, muted shades. Often, one color or fabric is repeated throughout the space.
Accented by rich details and extensive use of gold, bronze and gilt.
Furniture generally includes French royal style antiques or heirlooms.
Window treatments feature dramatic layers in the same color theme of the room.
Flowers fill out a French home.
So while I make my way around my house painting walls, arranging furniture, hanging pictures and mirrors; I know in what direction I’m headed. If I get lost, I just have to wander into my breakfast room to remind me of where I’m headed.

I followed your breakfast room make-over during the ORC, and I think it turned out beautifully! I also think those rooms in the photos are dreamy. I toured Versailles once, about 20 years ago. It is amazingly magnificent. Best wishes for continued success with your decorating ventures!

I just stumbled upon your blog, and I have to say I was simply blown away. So many gorgeous images to drool over.
I was privileged to tour Versailles once when I was a teenager and have never forgotten the beauty and elegance of that lovely palace. You have captured it so well. I look forward to enjoying more of your blog.

Your breakfast nook turned out just beautiful. It is refreshing to see a space that is deliberately elegant and full of beautiful details. Everyone seems to be jumping on the Farmhouse bandwagon these days. While I appreciate the simplicity of this style, I love all the color and pattern of by-gone French and English interiors.

I’m with you, Lisa! I’ve tried to tone down my style to be “on trend” and I just cannot pull it off. I gravitate to color and pattern. Thank you for stopping by!

Sigh, I think sometimes we all need a little Versailles. I can’t wait for the series to come back on.
And a little gilt anything is always fun. Thanks for your bravery, I love your breakfast room…and all the hand done elements you have introduced. That is what ‘Versailles’ is all about, hand crafted elements. Thanks, Sandi

Those are some grand and glamorous rooms! I am not the least bit surprised your style has changed over the years. I know mine has changed, but I am really lucky to have two homes and both are decorated totally differently. I went back to school as an adult and studied interior design and I did love all that I learned, but I can say I don’t love just one or two styles, I love a lot of them! Thank you for always coming to Celebrate Your Story and sharing your posts!
