Hello World! Welcome Friends! Please join me in welcoming Jason Tilton to the blog today!
You might be thinking about how best to treat the ceiling in your new living room renovation, and coffered ceilings came up as a classic, inviting design option. Indeed, coffered ceilings have a lot to offer in terms of design aesthetic, detail expression, and total transformation of interior space.
However, this isn’t a project to be taken lightly. Coffered ceilings can be tricky, and must be thought about carefully to make sure they not only are constructed correctly, but that they fit in well with the rest of the architecture of your home. On this infographic below, Jason Tilton of Fanatic Finish shows what every homeowner should know about coffered ceilings.
Here are 3 considerations when installing coffered ceilings.
1. Do I Have The Space?
While coffered ceilings do act to add depth and dimension to your interior space, they will require you to drop a grid of beams at least 6 inches into the space. If you already have low ceilings, this could create issues with scale and functionality. You should design the coffered ceiling so you have at least 8 feet of distance between the floor and the bottom of the dropped beam grid to make sure there is enough vertical space to remain comfortable.
2. Fake Or Functional?
Most coffered ceiling beams are entirely cosmetic – meaning they aren’t part of the structure of the home. If you are working with an existing space, none of the beams you end up installing will be load bearing. However, if you are designing a new home, you reserve the option to make the coffered ceiling a part of the roof or floor structure. This can be a cost-saving measure, and be an intriguing architectural feature guests and visitors will constantly be talking about.
Should I Invest?
Investing in coffered ceilings should come down to value. If you think they will add aesthetic, acoustic, and economic value to your home, there’s no reason not to sink the up-front cost in order to make it happen. Coffered ceilings aren’t cheap, but with the right application they can be just the thing to take your interiors to the next level.
It would be amazing to add a coffered ceiling to our Study. They lend such an elegant and timeless look to any room.
