Green Cleaning: Ways to Make Your Bathroom Sparkle Without Chemicals
It would be an admirable aim to have a conscience as clean as your bathroom once you have finished clearing away the grime and it is possible to do that if you find a way to ditch the bleach and harsh chemicals in favor of a safer and greener alternative.
Here is a look at some viable alternatives that allow you to get the cleaning results you are looking for in your bathroom without stressing about chemicals that are harmful to the environment and even to your health if you are not careful.
Cleaning without harmful chemicals
With companies like CleanHappens.com promoting greener cleaning products for us to use it is helping to satisfy a growing demand for a safer and more environmentally-friendly option that does the job of applying some sparkle without the need for harmful chemicals.
The fact that the EPA classifies over 270 of the antibacterial agents frequently found in cleaning products as pesticides should be a warning in itself, especially when certain pesticides have been linked to some serious health issues.
These harsh chemicals can irritate your skin and even get into your lungs so it makes a lot of sense to try and find some safer alternatives that do an equally good job of cleaning your bathroom but without the need to resort to harsh chemicals in order to do so.
A safer way to say goodbye to soap scum
A good example of how you can find a greener way of cleaning your bathroom would be when you use a baking soda paste to tackle soap scum.
A simple solution made up of baking soda and a natural dish soap will combine to make a very effective paste that does a great job of removing soap scum. This homemade solution compares favorably to any store-bought rival plus you don’t have the chemical concerns.
You can use the paste to remove scum from all the usual hotspots like shower doors and all you have to do is apply the paste with a sponge or cloth before wiping it clean with some warm water.
If you get some stubborn stains on the grout you can put some of the paste on a toothbrush to tackle the problem.
A good use for vinegar
Vinegar is always a handy ally when you are tackling some cleaning jobs without resorting to chemicals and one way to use this ingredient is for cleaning windows and mirrors in the bathroom.
You might already know about using vinegar for cleaning your windows but it is just as effective in cleaning your mirrors. Make up a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and then use a clean and dry rag to wipe it clean and leave a sparkling finish.
Vinegar is definitely versatile as a green cleaning product and you can also use it to tackle mold.
If you want to remove a buildup of mold and mildew from places in your bathroom like the shower, all you have to do is spray the affected areas with vinegar and let it dry. Once it is dry, spray the vinegar again but this time wipe it clean straight away.
The mild acidity of vinegar is very effective in loosening particles and killing off bacteria. It is also worth remembering that it’s easier to prevent mold developing in the first place rather than cleaning it, so have a solution of water and vinegar top hand in the bathroom which you can spray after a shower as a way of keeping mold at bay.
Keeping your toilet clean
You want to keep a nice clean toilet in the bathroom that doesn’t smell and looks free of germs and stains and you can do this without the need to buy a chemical-based toilet cleaner that is harmful to the environment.
As part of your weekly cleaning ritual arrange to sprinkle a small amount of baking soda around the inside of the toilet and at the same time pour in a cup of undiluted white vinegar into the toilet.
Use a toilet brush to scrub it clean and you should find that the combination of the white vinegar and baking soda is not only good at removing stains but getting rid of any lingering pongs at the same time.
It only requires a few basic natural ingredients and a bit of know-how to ditch the chemicals and find a greener alternative that still produces great results and leaves your bathroom gleaming.
