Hello World! Welcome Friends! Well, here we are again for a new session of the One Room Challenge. I participated last year in October for the first time transforming Little Dedicated’s room into a Pink Parisian Dream.
The Pink Parisian Dream transformation can be found here.
About the One Room Challenge:: The ORC is a six week challenge (in its 11th season!) created by Linda from Calling it Home in media partnership with House Beautiful. Twice a year Linda invites 20 bloggers/designers to transform a room in their house from start to finish and share all the details online within a six week timeline. There are some great sponsors who also join in the fun which allows for the participants to be even more creative in the details and the pieces that they incorporate.

Shortly after completing the One Room Challenge last year, our Red Brick Colonial sold and now we are in a brand new house with soaring ceilings and tall windows! The room that is going to get some attention is the breakfast room. Let me show you the space so you can get an idea of what I’m starting with.
As you can see, it desperately needs to have the paint lightened up.
The plantation shutters will be staying since they are good quality. I wish I could replace the tile, but that will have to wait.
It’s nice that it is situated next to the kitchen, but the space is not large and the back door opening and closing make the space feel smaller with my existing furniture.
The archway leads to the laundry room and the powder room. Also, there is a bar area on both the breakfast room and family room side of the kitchen.
The plan was to lighten up the paint, which was accomplished the week prior to our move in date.
During the paint process.
Here it is with my existing furniture. I love the table from Ballard Designs, however it just isn’t working. We’ve turned it in both directions to try to get it to work, but it just doesn’t do the space justice and makes it difficult opening and closing the back door. Plus we can’t put the leaf in because it would stick out into the walkway to the laundry room, powder room and garage.
The Plan
New furniture is a must and I have been saving my blog income for such a time as this. The space is calling for a round table and of course I have to have a chest. I like to have placemats and napkins handy instead of storing them in the kitchen. Something like this would be dreamy!
For the Wall
This Chinoiserie Birds and Roses Wall Mural Sencil is the only definite that I have for the plan. This will go on the wall that has the archway to the back hall. Since the wall has already been painted, I haven’t quite decided on the colors of the birds and roses. Here are some ideas:
I could paint the stencil one color or do a multiple color.
Typical me, I’m leaning toward painting multiple colors. I better get cracking on this as soon as the stencil gets here.
Mirror Inspiration
Originally I had planned to put Bessie the Cow on the wall, but I thought with the stencil, it might just be too much. So, next step is to find a mirror that won’t break my bank and will look perfect in the space.
Console Lighting
I probably need to wait until the stencil is finished to get the lamps, but my faves so far are #2 and #4.
Rugs
My favorite rug is #2 that brilliant blue and white, but I know it will be too busy. I will probably end up with a beige rug to give the furniture a nice foundation to sit on.
Overhead Lighting
As you can see, there is only a can light above the table. Also, the light is not centered on the window and wall. We are looking into moving the light, but the air duct might be in the way. I’ll keep you posted on whether we will be able to move the light. It’s not bad where it is because it is slightly off. So, if we can’t move the light, it won’t ruin the design. The ceilings are high so I have space to play with when it comes to picking out a chandelier.
All 3 selections are so different, it really will depend on the stencil. Since the ceiling height is nice, I could go with a larger one.
Last, but not least…
Curtains
Oh, and then there is this:
I am seriously in love with this one. However, this fabric is quite pricey. It might have to be saved for pillows and not curtains.
Alright, that’s it on this end. Are you participating in the One Room Challenge? If so, I would love to hear about your room!
The clock is ticking! See you next Thursday with hopefully some progress! Thank you for popping in for a visit! Have a great day/night depending on where you are in the world! Go with God and remember to be kind to one another!

Thanks Stacey! The paint color is Sherwin Williams Gray Screen 7071. It’s perfection! Happy day to you!

I love this first rug, but I think you’re right about needing a neutral with everything else you have planned – also love the curtain ideas and fabric. It’ll be so fun to see this blank space transformed! Good luck!

I think your design is quite beautiful. I particularly like the green and blue Chinoise fabric. I am not surprised it is pricey, it’s so classy. It easily could be taken for a Brunshwig and Fils or Colefax & Fowler.

Thank you, Lisa! I’m having a hard time choosing fabric! I better get that choice narrowed down quick! Thanks for stopping by!
Sarah says
Kathryn, it is going to be gorgeous. I love the idea of the stencil and totally agree about that last fabric. I want to use it for something. ‘-)
The round table will work well in this space. Perhaps you can find another use for the long table. Do you have a game room or large family room? It would make a great library table. Good luck as you move forward.
thededicatedhouse@gmail.com says
Thanks so much, Sarah! The long breakfast table has been moved into the study and Mr. Dedicated has claimed it for his desk! He loves how big the table is! Have a lovely week!

I love your ideas! You’re so good at this and I know it’s going to be fantastic. Love that fabric!

Lots of choices you have to make here. I think I would drag a bunch of samples home—first to see if the tones will work with everything. Wouldn’t be the first time I dragged wallpaper books home and then not bought wallpaper. The Chinoiserie mirror is gorgeous, but awful pricey for ‘resin’. Good luck, I will look forward to your progress, Sandi

Although it is a job to find your way and design sense in a new home, it is an adventure I enjoy. Sounds like you are enjoying it too. I love so many of the things you are being inspired here! Thanks for sharing at Celebrate Your Story!

Oh, my goodness! I have been eyeing that stencil for months now. I couldn’t wrap my head around one color for the stencil, but wasn’t sure that the multi colors wouldn’t be too much. I was telling a friend my dilemma – who has stenciled a lot – and she suggested doing one color letting it dry then going back over stencil and give it a shadow. I ordered it immediately. I can’t wait to see what your dining area turns out like, I LOVE that material!
