Hello World! Welcome Friends! Post-back surgery, you’ll want many accommodations to help you recover. Prepare ahead of time. You will know exactly how things will be and have everything you need to live as easily as possible. This is until you return to your usual self.
Must-haves after back surgery can also increase the likelihood of an incident-free and positive surgical outcome. Here is a quick checklist of must-haves to ease your back surgery recovery.
Doctor Instructions
Ensure you read through all the detailed instructions provided to you by your doctor. These instructions will likely cover everything from ice/heat to pain medicines. They will also cover how to rest and what to do to minimize recovery risks.
Heating Pad & Ice Packs
At a certain point after surgery, you will be allowed to apply heat to resolve pain and discomfort. A heating pad can reduce discomfort greatly. Ensure you have it plugged in and ready to use.
Hot/cold therapy can soothe pain in a way heat cannot. Have an ice pack you can remove from the freezer when needed.
Back Support Brace
A back support brace keeps you from bending or twisting your spine in a potentially dangerous way. It’s also a reminder to your physical self to preserve your posture and support your back. Especially if you’re prescribed a back brace, but even if you’re not, it can work wonders after a spinal injury or surgery.
Water Bottle & Proper Meals
If you don’t have a dedicated water bottle to carry with you, get one. Stay hydrated post-surgery. This is crucial to your recovery.
Foods high in protein and easy meals. Resist the urge to eat junk food. Have healthy meals ready to go, with proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Grabber Device
A grabber, aka a reacher or gripper, can help you pick things up off the floor and reach up for items without stretching, bending, or twisting. This tool is indispensable for preventing injury.
Comfortable Clothes
Have some comfy clothes you can slip into, get comfortable, and wear for a few days if needed. Ideally, some silk pajamas or a similar material that’s soft on the skin can be extremely helpful.
Entertainment
You may be locked in your favorite chair, couch, or bed for some time. Have some entertainment to avoid boredom. Think about your favorite TV shows, movies, books, music, or media you’ve been waiting to consume. Have it ready when you get home.
Comfortable Bed
Invest in a comfy bed, a nice mattress, a sound machine, or blackout curtains if you need them. Now’s the right time to sleep. Ensure your bed is the most comfortable before surgery is over.
Extra Pillows
Extra pillows will provide comfort and support and reduce discomfort. If possible, have more pillows than you need. Depending on your position and location, you never know how many you need.
Recliner
If you’re lucky enough to get a recliner, do it. A recliner will raise your legs and keep your upper back propped up, easing stress on your frame and helping you recover.
Toilet Riser
A toilet riser can help you get on and off the toilet. It’s a rounded piece of moulded plastic that fits on your seat, providing an elevated height.
Shower Chair
When you shower, you want it to be comfortable. Use a shower chair. Allow the heat and steam to ease those aches while you do what work you can. A shower chair can make the whole experience easier.
Back Scratcher
You may not be able to bend over or reach up for a while. A back scratcher can help you feel more comfortable by caring for itches that won’t disappear.
Mini Fridge
A mini fridge nearby mitigates the inconvenience of mobility loss. Instead of getting up and down, have a mini fridge within arm’s reach to store some meals and beverages for yourself to enjoy.
Someone to Check Up on You
Especially in the early days after surgery, have someone check on you daily. Even if it’s only over the phone, ensuring you have someone to talk to and report if anything is suspicious in your recovery can be beneficial.
Cleaning Help
Have someone clean the house and care for the yard. This is a must because you can’t do it yourself. Make a task list beforehand of what you need to be done, so it’s clear what you need help with.
