Hello World! Welcome Friends! Everyone’s familiar with those stretches where you feel stuck in a rut – like you’re simply existing rather than actually living. These are the times when we need to be willing to embrace change, take ownership, and realize that our growth and happiness ultimately depends on us alone. We explore ten ways to grow as a person and get more meaning out of each day.
1. Try Something New
Whether it’s as big as finally booking that overseas holiday, or as small as paying a visit to a local museum, trying something new is a great way to get out of your own head! If you can align this new experience with one of your bigger goals –like signing up for a dance class, or if you want to work on your physical fitness– even better.
2. What Can I Do Today to Make Tomorrow Better?
Humans are great at procrastinating – but until you fully embrace the concept that your future is shaped by what you do in the present, you’ll find it hard to stop putting things off. The more clearly you can envision how small steps can lead to big gains, the more motivated you become to embrace the power of today.
3. Learn to Really Listen
We all do it – find ourselves ‘zoning out’ of a conversation. It might be because we’re not all that interested in the subject matter – or that we disagree with the other person’s view and are already preparing a counterargument without actually taking in what they’re saying. We also understand instinctively that this isn’t the right approach to take! One technique which many find helpful is to pretend you’re going to have to summarize or pass on the message to someone else. This forces you to pay attention and ask questions to make sure you understand what’s being said.
4. Read More
Reading is one of the best ways to expand your horizons and learn new things without even trying. Whether you explore a subject you’ve been curious about for some time, or simply allow yourself to get lost in a captivating tale, putting yourself in the shoes of others will always help you grow as a person. Head over to the local library or your favorite online book store and let the magic begin!
5. Laugh!
One of the best lessons you can learn in this life is to never take yourself too seriously! Making time for some lighthearted entertainment, whether it’s a live comedy event or your favorite silly TV show, can help you keep things in perspective.
6. Give Back
Nothing makes you feel better than doing something great for someone else or for a good cause. Find out what non-profits in your area could use a willing volunteer, make a donation, commit to buying sustainable and ethical products, and get involved in community cleanups and recycling efforts.
7. Set Meaningful Goals and Take Ownership of Your Future
Without clearly defined goals, it’s pretty hard to formulate a strategy to get you there! Think about what you really want to accomplish, and outline the steps you need to take to get there. Set yourself deadlines, be realistic in your expectations, and willing to learn from your mistakes along the way.
8. Get Grateful
It’s so easy to start taking the wonderful things in our lives for granted. Set yourself a challenge to jot down a list of some of the things you’re grateful for every day, or recite some in your head last thing at night. If people come up on that list, then take the time to drop them a line and let them know you much you appreciate them. You’ll make their day, and strengthen your relationship in the process.
9. Learn to Stand Up for Yourself
For many people, saying no is something they never quite get the hang of. We’re social creatures, and we want others to like us – but it’s also our responsibility to let someone know when their demands on our time are unreasonable. They’re not psychic, so you need to make them aware they’re asking too much of you so a compromise can be reached.
10. Forgive Others, and Yourself
Think back on all the situations you wish you’d handled differently. There are probably quite a few, right? We are all flawed, fallible human beings trying (and yes, sometimes failing) to do our best – and that includes you. Learn to keep that in mind before you judge yourself or someone else too harshly, and you’re well on the path to personal growth!
