Hello World! Welcome Friends! The pandemic changed the way we work and socialize. To keep employees safe many companies are starting to offer more remote opportunities. About 4.3 million people work from home part-time. With this shift, more people are finding ways to create their ideal office space. Here are a few design tips to get you started.
1. Let In the Sunlight
Try to place your desk near a window. If this isn’t an option, you can use artificial light, like lamps, to brighten up the area. Having a room with natural light helps you feel more energized and productive. It also has health benefits, such as providing Vitamin D which boosts your mood and helps you sleep. Another bonus is you help the environment by reducing your overall energy consumption.
2. Choose a Quiet Area
With a family, it can be hard to find a quiet space for yourself. However, this is critical to help you stay focused. Try to find an office area that gets less traffic, such as a spare bedroom. If you can find a room with a door that can also help block out the noise. You can even wear noise-canceling headphones and set up dividers to get some privacy.
3. Have Fun With Paint
Colors can elicit certain emotions. For example, yellow can evoke feelings of energy and warmth. So, you want to choose colors for your office that inspire productivity. Natural tones, such as blues, greens and whites, are common for workstations.
These can promote feelings of calmness and focus. If you want to experiment with different colors, create an accent wall. This is where one wall is painted a different shade of the primary color or a different color altogether.
4. Select Comfy Furniture
You spend about five hours per day sitting for work. So, you need a comfy chair that allows you to get work done and promotes proper posture. Look for an ergonomic chair, with good lumbar support and an armrest. Along with the seat, invest in a standing desk. They help reduce back pain and allow you to get up and stretch. When sitting at your desk, ensure your feet are flat and your computer monitor is at eye level.
5. Personalize the Space
Decorating your home office can increase productivity and make it feel more welcoming. Surround yourself with personal items that motivate you, such as inspirational posters. You can also include photos of family or friends or fun artwork. In addition, adding in some plants can make you feel more relaxed.
6. Design the Space With Your Needs in Mind
Remember what works for some people may not work for everyone. You want the space to be functional for you specifically. To start, think about the type of work you do. Suppose you spend most of the time on the computer. Ensure you have a reliable internet connection and extension cords. If you spend more time working with documents, ensure you have large enough desk space. Before designing, know this information to save yourself time and stress.
7. Get Rid of All Distractions
Working at home has its own set of challenges. While it gives you a flexible schedule you are more easily distracted by your phone or children. So, try to set boundaries with yourself. For example, consider putting your phone in the drawer while working. Then you can check notifications during your lunch break.
Also, try to keep your breaks to a reasonable time. Resist the urge to binge-watch a series or spend hours on household chores. Another tip is to communicate with your children and let them know the times you will be unavailable.
8. Add More Storage
You may have limited space in your office, so brainstorm creative storage solutions. This will allow you to organize your things and work more productively. For example, invest in a dual-purpose coffee table. You can use the lift-up section for your computer and store essential documents on the lower part.
Here are some more storage ideas:
- Take advantage of wall space
- Use lockers for storage
- Buy a pull-down desk
- Use a magazine filer for papers
- Repurpose an old dresser
9. Hide Computer Cords
Most people are on their laptops at some point during the day. So, make sure the charger cords are in an easily accessible outlet. To increase the aesthetic of the room, encase your desk cords in fabric. Then control the cords on the floor with cord winders, tubing to a wire organizer. This makes your space look tidier and prevents tripping hazards.
10. Keep Your Space Clean
Having a tidy space can make you feel happier and it looks more professional. The last thing you want is a cluttered background during your zoom meetings. Also, properly position your camera so any lamps don’t look like they’re sprouting from your head.
To help keep a tidy office, invest in plenty of storage and use desk organizers to free up space. Also, consider getting rid of old paperwork and cleaning up at the end of each workday.
