Hello World! Welcome Friends! There are various things to consider before buying a garage door beyond its color and style. Here are the ten things considered significant to look for when purchasing a new door for your garage.
What Is the Standard Size?
For residential garages, the measurements of the garage door will be like:
- Single Car Garage: 8 by 7 feet tall or nine by 7 feet tall
- Double garage door: 16 feet by 7 feet tall
If you are going for a customized door, there will be unlimited options for you to choose from.
Do You Want Insulation?
Insulated garage doors have now been in practice in most households. The reason is they increase the energy efficiency of your house manifolds. Insulation won’t cause your garage to take up heat from the room adjacent to the wall. Ultimately, you can control the environment of your garage. And you’ll also be able to save on your bills.
Can You Install a Garage Door Yourself?
Yes, you can. However, the DIY installation of garage doors brings you more trouble than benefits. You may save a few hundred dollars, but in turn, you won’t be able to get the warranty that a professional installer can provide you. Furthermore, it’ll take the whole day for you to install, and you may even get hurt during the process. Hence, for safety and warranty reasons, it’s always suggested to hire a pro for installation.
What Is a Gauge Number?
If you decide to buy an uninsulated steel garage door, prefer 24-gauge steel over 25-gauge. Insulation adds to the resistibility of the door. Since you want an uninsulated gate, the 24-gauge steel is optimal to prevent dents. The smaller the gauge number, the thicker will be the steel.
Are Windows Necessary?
Getting windows in the top panel of a garage door is totally up to you. However, if you want some natural light to enter and illuminate your garage, windows can do the job. Just make sure that you’re choosing the right design and glass material that suits the door style.
Let the Software Find You a Perfect Match
Do you know that many manufacturers have websites with a facility to help you find a garage door that looks made-for-it? Their websites use software that allows you to upload a picture of your garage and then choose color, design, windows, anything to see how it’ll look in real life after it finishes.
Get a New Door Opener Along
As you’re spending on a new garage door, it’s not a bad idea to ask your laborer to install a new garage door opener along with the door. It’s necessary if you want your garage to remain quiet instead of making a weird squeaking sound. Nowadays, belt drive is more preferred as it serves the purpose well.
Strength Rating
The higher the resistance, the greater will be the durability and shelf life of your garage door. Each material varies in its strength to face wind storms, pressure, humidity, and other factors. It largely depends on the location you’re living in. So, carefully watch out for these factors before purchase.
Safety
If you’ve kids or pets in the home, you must consider installing garage door openers with safety sensors. They’ll detect if something is coming in a way while closing the door and either stop or reverse the direction to prevent accidents.
Advanced Features
With technology, everything is getting convenient. You can now control to open, close, or allow someone to enter through the garage door without being physically present. Some modern doors come with an app-controlled system so you’ll have access to the status of your garage door, whether open or closed when outside the home.
Conclusion
Though we’ve tried to cover all the fundamental things to note when you shop for a new garage door, you may look for other options according to your requirements.

A timely post for us. We are switching insurance companies after finally getting our new roof. The new insurance company is requiring us to install upgraded hurricane standard garage doors. Being in SW Florida we don’t need the insulation, which added significantly to the cost. Our current doors aren’t insulated either and it has not been a problem. I wasn’t aware of the steel ratings though. I’m going to have Mike check on what we just ordered this past Thursday. Fingers crossed that we ordered the right thing. Another great post. Thank you.

We will need to replace our garage doors in the next couple of years. Hopefully, it won’t be too challenging. Good luck with your new doors!
