Hello World! Welcome Friends! Remodeling your home can be an expensive and time consuming activity, but it could be worth it if you make sure you’re going to get it right. Here we have 10 things to do before you remodel your home that will help you to avoid wasting time and money and ensure your home is transformed into your ideal space:
1. Know Your Maximum Budget
First, you should have an accurate number for your maximum budget. Remember, there may be hidden costs that you only find later down the line, so don’t spend your entire budget right away. Just because you have a specific amount of money you can afford to spend, doesn’t mean you should frivolous start ordering supplies and materials. Stay within your budget and try to find the best deals.
2. Understand How You’d Like To Use Your Home
Knowing how you’d like to use your home is key if you’re going to make these changes worth it. Do you wish you could spend more time in the kitchen catching up as a family? Do you wish you had more storage space so you could get rid of clutter? Or perhaps you’d love a bigger garden for your kids and pets to play in? What would your ideal home look like?
3. Define What Works For You And What Doesn’t
Figure out what’s working for you right now and what isn’t working for you and why. This can help you to make appropriate changes while keeping what you actually like. If there are awkward spaces in your home that are going to waste, figure out how you can use them.
4. Ensure It Is Going To Make Financial Sense
If you ever plan on selling your home, even years down the line, then you really want to avoid making changes that will make your home stand out for the wrong reasons. For instance, adding a pool can actually make a home harder to sell.
5. Prepare Yourself For The Disruption
Remodeling your home means disruption to your day to day lives. However, becoming aware of timelines, such as a kitchen remodeling timeline, should give you an idea of how long until things get back to normal. Of course, this will depend on who you choose to work with and what they tell you.
6. Make Sure You Don’t Need Planning Permission
You don’t need planning permission for small changes, but larger changes may require planning permission – and you should be 100% sure before you go ahead with your remodel, or you may have to tear down your hard work.
7. Make Sure You’ve Spent Time In The Space
If you haven’t yet spent time in your remodeled space, don’t pick colors, patterns, carpets, and light fixtures yet. The choices are overwhelming, but you’ll have a far better idea of what to do once you’ve spent time in the space and you can understand better what it needs.
8. Be Realistic About Your Timeline
Your renovation will probably take longer than expected, if it’s anything like other renovations. Most do tend to go over the expected timeline! Make sure you make accommodations in advance to avoid frustrations. Removal of old fixtures can take a few hours, but finding the ideal fixtures to replace your old stuff can take a good few weeks. Don’t rush! You want to take your time to find fixtures and fittings you’re going to want to keep for a while.
9. Interview Multiple Contractors
Don’t go for the first contractor that you find on Google. Interview multiple contractors and compare bids, as well as how well you get along with them and their portfolios. Speaking to several experts will give you a better idea of your options and how what you want is achievable. Of course, going for the cheapest contractor is not always the best idea – so make sure you go for one with the best results and happiest clients, too.
10. Expect the Unexpected
You may not know exactly what’s hiding under your floors, in the walls, and elsewhere. You might just find things you never knew were there! Things are usually always discovered while a home renovation is underway. By expecting the unexpected and allowing extra time, you will reduce stress and won’t feel so annoyed when these things happen.
