Hello World! Welcome Friends! The tradition of spring cleaning probably came from a few different sources. The Jews were told to perform a cleaning ritual with Passover, a holiday celebrated in the Spring. However, when homes were heated by fireplace, the home would be closed all winter. When the temperatures of spring came, it was time to clean the walls and windows that were covered in soot and ash. Plus, spring is a time that people just become more active. This year, don’t think of your spring cleaning as a chore, but as time of renewal and regeneration. And as a way to prevent bugs and pests in your home.
Outside Spring Cleaning Tips
- Inspect the exterior of your home for rotted wood, ripped screens, loose mortar and deteriorated weather stripping. Replace these things to keep insects from entering your home and making a colony.
- Trim bushes and branches away from your home. Remove rotted wood from tree stumps or wood piles.
- Get a garden rake by Fiskars here, and rake up any leaves that have been piled up over the winter.
- Clean your gutters. The leaves and moisture are an invitation for many pests to create a nest.
- Clean up any place that could hold water. Pests and rodents are attracted to water and moisture. Standing water is also an invitation for female mosquitoes to lay eggs. If you have a pond, make sure that the water flows or add mosquito fish to eat the larvae. Change the water weekly in a bird bath.
Inside Spring Cleaning Tips for Pest Control
- Go through your kitchen cabinets and remove old and outdated food. Vacuum the cupboards to get the dust and debris out of the shelves which can attract insects.
- Keep food in sealed plastic containers.
- Clean out behind appliances. Check for leaks or water drips that can attract ants, roaches and moths.
- Give the bathroom a thorough going over. Check for even small leaks or moisture on pipes, because cockroaches and silverfish are attracted to moisture. Clean out the medicine cabinet. Check the caulking to ensure no water is leaking through.
- Inspect your attic, basement and closets. Instead of using cardboard boxes to store items, switch to plastic. Seal all crevices and cracks to prevent insects and rodents from entering your home.

Good tips! You can’t emphasize making sure that door thresholds are properly sealed and windows are tightly screened. We also advise our customers to keep trash containers sealed and trash areas cleaned up.

Thanks for the post which is really informative. The American Society of Home Inspectors suggests cleaning gutters in both fall and spring. In the fall, it’s important to remove leaves. But other things can fall into your gutters, too, from balls to bird’s nests. And in the winter, ice can melt during the day, then freeze at night and expand, potentially going up and under shingles and causing an ice dam.

I like your tip to get rid of any standing water in the yard to cut down on mosquitos. My sister gets a lot of rain where she lives and she’s always complaining about mosquitos. I’ll recommend she hire a professional to come help her out, but in the meantime to get rid of as much standing water as possible.

Its almost impossible to attend to all of the home chores everyday particularly on checking your backyard. Just make sure that you have your food container tightly closed and avoid spillage or wipe it immediately since it best attracts cockroach colony growth.
