Hello World! Welcome Friends! There’s more to decorating a guest bedroom than just painting the walls. Keep reading for 10 key tips for decorating your guest bedroom.
Decorating a guest bedroom can become more difficult than decorating your own bedroom at times. Why? Because when you’re decorating your own bedroom, you only have to think about what you need and enjoy or what you and your partner need and enjoy.
When you’re looking to decorate a guest bedroom, the whole scenario changes. You’re now decorating a room to fit someone else’s needs, not yours. You’ll need to consider everything that a guest will need and want while in someone else’s home. A great way to ensure that you do so is to think about the things you’d need and enjoy having if you were visiting someone else’s home.
However, although this is a good strategy, there’s still the chance of forgetting something important. That’s where this guide comes into play. Listed below are 10 tips for decorating your guest bedroom to ensure your guests have an ideal visit.

1. An Inviting and Comfortable Bed
The bedding and type of bed that you choose for your guest bedroom can make quite a difference in your guests’ overall experience. Don’t settle with an old mattress that you no longer have use for as the guest bedroom bed. If it was no longer comfortable for you, it won’t be comfortable for them either.
Place a comfortable mattress in the guest bedroom so your guests will get a refreshing night’s sleep each night. If you don’t have the means to purchase an expensive new mattress, you can consider purchasing a nice air mattress instead. These mattresses are quite comfortable and can be placed on top of a box spring with ease.
You’ll also want to choose inviting and comfortable bedding. Again, don’t settle with old bedding that you no longer use as the guest bedroom’s bedding set. Instead, be sure to provide your guests with bedding that’s soft and comfortable and displays inviting colors.
For example, a Mulberry silk pillowcase on each of the pillows provides your guests with comfort, durability, and luxury.
2. A Designated Space for Clothing and Luggage
You’ll also want to ensure that there’s a dedicated space for clothing and luggage. Don’t use your guest bedroom as another closet for your extra shoes, clothes, or household items. Instead, ensure that there’s enough space for all of your guests’ clothes and items.
Placing a small table or even a chest at the end of the bed create perfect places for your guests to rest their luggage on. Drawers in your guest bedroom’s dresser, nightstand, or wardrobe closet should all be cleared out and available for their use. This makes your guests feel more comfortable unpacking their belongings.
3. Optimal Space with a Comfy Seating Place
It’s important that you provide your guests with optimal space in the guest bedroom. You should also include a comfy seating area for them as well. The best way to ensure that your guests have enough space in the room is to not overcrowd things.
Use smaller furniture items if needed. You don’t need to place oversized nightstands or dressers in the room. Remember, your guests are only staying temporarily and won’t need large storage items.
If the space permits, add in a comfy seating area for your guests to read their books, morning newspapers, talking on the phone, or just simply relax. Even if there isn’t enough room for a full seating area including a small table, you can still place a single chair in the corner of the room, preferably near a window.
4. Light Fixtures Near the Bed
We know that feeling of trying to make our way around the house in the dark and end up stubbing our toe. Ouch! You won’t want your guests to experience this while staying with you, and because it’s not their home, it’ll be even harder for them to navigate through it in the dark.
For this reason, ensure that there’s at least one light fixture near the bed and one near the door to the room. This way, whether they’re in bed or just walking into the room, your guests can easily turn on or turn off the lights. It’s super convenient to have light fixtures near the bed for night trips to the bathroom.
5. A Relaxing Color Scheme
When choosing what color paint to paint the walls in your guest bedroom, consider choosing a relaxing color scheme. You’ll want the space to be relaxing for your guests, so you won’t want to choose all bold or dark colors that may cause anxious or depressing emotions. Rather, stick with a monochromatic color scheme.
A monochromatic color scheme is the best way to take any color and make it relaxing. This color scheme uses different shades of the same color throughout the design. Otherwise, you could also stick with warm colors like yellow, hues of blue, and so on.
6. A Homey, But Not Personal Touch
When decorating your guest bedroom, you don’t want it to feel cold. Give the space a homey touch, but don’t make it personal. This means you won’t want to add in pictures of your family around the room.
Instead, consider hanging your favorite artwork pieces on the walls. This keeps a part of yourself in the room without making it feel too personal. You could also consider hanging pictures on the wall or placing pictures on the nightstand that you’ve taken yourself, but don’t necessarily include you or your family in them.
This will help your guests feel more at home. If they’re looking at pictures of your family the whole time they’re in their room, they might become homesick or feel out of place.
7. The Basic Necessities
Don’t forget the basic necessities that every guest should have. These necessities include a lighted-up clock next to the bed (an alarm clock or clock with a radio are all awesome choices), paper with writing utensils in the nightstand drawer, tissues next to the bed, and a hairdryer and iron with ironing board.
These are all of the basics that any guest staying anywhere might need. That’s why all of these items are quite commonly found in hotel rooms. Provide your guests with these basic necessities and they won’t have to ask you for as much while they’re there.
If your home has a landline, consider placing a phone in the room as well.
8. A Space With Privacy
As you know, one of the most essential desires that a guest has is the desire for privacy. It’s already hard enough staying in someone else’s home. You don’t want to make your guests feel even more uncomfortable by not providing them with enough privacy.
To do so, place window covering on your guest bedroom’s windows that provide privacy and light-darkening features. Make sure that the curtains or blinds that you choose go well with the room’s overall color scheme.
9. Snacks and Entertainment
Just like you would find in a hotel or motel room, you’ll want to provide your guests with snacks and entertainment in their room. The best way to provide snacks without making it look messy is to place fruits or wrapped-snack items along with a bottle of water in a basket. This keeps all the items together and organized.
It’s also a good idea to place a small wastebasket near the bed or dresser for your guests to throw away tissues, snack wrappers, and more. There are several cute wastebaskets that you can buy that will fit into your room’s design. It’s also a good idea to include a television in the room.
Add a DVD player along with some favorite DVDs to watch as well. You should make sure that the remote is kept near the bed, such as on the nightstand so that your guests can turn the tv on or off without getting out of bed.
10. A Low-Maintenance Space
The very last thing, but maybe the most important thing in your eyes, to consider when decorating your guest bedroom is maintenance. You’ll want to create a space that’s low in maintenance. To do so, choose linens that can easily be mix-matched with one another and the room’s design.
This ensures that you won’t have to worry about finding matching bedding each time the linens need changing. Have extra bedding available, but ensure that all the bedding can mix-match with one another. Consider buying travel-sized toiletries and placing them in a basket for your guests to quickly grab when needed.
Last, be sure to provide your guests with extra pillows, bedding, and throws inside their room so they won’t have to ask you for more.
