Hello World! Welcome Friends! Wedding dress preservation is now even easier and more affordable than ever. Here are 10 easy steps to wedding dress preservation you can take from the comfort and convenience of your home.
1. Act Quickly
Since stains will quickly set into the fabric of a wedding dress, you will want to have it professionally cleaned as soon as possible after your wedding. Even if you don’t see any stains on your dress, there are invisible stains (e.g., perspiration, perfume, white wine, cake frosting) that will surface later and damage the fabric. Wedding dress preservation also includes the cleaning of your wedding dress.
2. Find the Right Company
Find a reputable company that specializes in wedding dress preservation. Most local dry cleaners do not specialize in wedding dresses, and will usually send your dress off to a specialist behind the scenes and mark up the price. Ask for references or view reviews online from other brides on popular sites such as The Knot or WeddingWire.
3. Select a Package with Insurance
Select a wedding dress preservation package that is best for your dress and is within your budget. Consider the value of your dress and the amount of insurance coverage you want. Companies often will offer additional insurance at a nominal price for more expensive wedding dresses.
4. Order Online
You can order a wedding dress preservation kit online, which will include a shipping kit, complete with a fold out box, a pre-paid shipping label, stickers to point out stains, and instructions.
5. Package Up Your Dress
Once you received your shipping kit, place any stain stickers on your dress that may need special attention. Then place your wedding dress in the plastic bag and press out as much extra air as possible so it will fit into the box. Complete the paperwork to ensure the shipping address is correct, as well as your email address so you can receive status updates.
6. Ship Your Dress
Although this might sound daunting to ship your dress, rest assured that your wedding dress is much more precious to you than anyone else. UPS is known for their reputation to track their packages every step of the way. Take your packaged dress to any UPS location and keep your tracking number for reference.
7. Confirm Delivery
Although you will receive a confirmation email soon after your wedding dress arrives at the cleaning facility, it can take several days before your dress is fully checked in and evaluated, which can delay the notification time. The best way to confirm it has arrived safely is with your UPS tracking number.
8. Sit Back and Relax
Depending on the time of year, it will take anywhere from 4 – 8 weeks for your dress to be cleaned and preserved. You will receive an email notifying you when your dress is on it’s way back to you and a tracking number so you know when it will arrive. An adult signature will typically be required.
9. Receive and Inspect Your Dress
Inspect your wedding dress once you get it back to be sure it’s cleaned to your satisfaction. You can open the preservation chest without voiding the guarantee as long as you don’t fully remove it. Notify the company as soon as possible if anything is not to your satisfaction and they will make it right for you.
10. Properly Store Your Preserved Dress
Store your gown in a cool dry area such as a closet or under the bed. Try to lay it flat to keep it from shifting inside the preservation chest. Never store your gown in an attic or basement. Check your dress every 5 years or so to ensure there is no mold or mildew. If there is ever a problem with your dress contact the company as they are usually very willing to help address any issues even years later.
